Their pit stop at Cabal seemed to be paying off. They’d been working on some research with access to supplies and information that were more readily available, and Rozalin had been able to send forward information to confirm the exact location to the next step towards her freedom. There was one challenge she needed to address now, however: Cabal. Even if she were free of her former life and the bindings that kept her to it, she was still technically a member of the military organization that she’d literally been dragged to.
So now, here she was, standing alone and more than ready to cross that line that would let her leave whenever she chose. She no longer hated the place or the people in it, but she felt no strong ties to the place that had decided she belonged there. The place of assumed authority. She’d gone her whole life without them, with and without qi, dodging them time and again, and though the resentment had faded, she would not be sad to leave it and its walls behind.
Thus she stood before the board, preparing to show them what she had learned so far. It still felt like so little, but apparently it was enough to attempt the test. Perhaps it was because she’d had none of it for so long, but she brushed the thought aside as she nodded at the men and women in front of her. No siren song played, the minion purposely left out of the test.
“Between the report of my recruitment,” sarcasm dripped from the word almost as much as her disdain did, “and the mandatory testing, I’m aware that you know of my innate ability.” Case in point, she drew her sword and struck once at the dummy before her, sending it flying back with the single diagonal slash. Another reminder that she would not miss this place.
“As you well know, things change.” She motioned forward the volunteer to help demonstrate her ability, striking out at him with a fist to his sternum. Ice formed where her body made contact with his armor, the familiar X formed of ice spreading out and just touching the edge of his skin with the force of her blow. He didn’t even stumble back, much as she expected, though she could see the goosebumps around the edge of the ice on his skin. More importantly, there was a tint of black to his skin around it, as well, especially she dragged her fingertips along his skin.
It came so easily to her, the pirate didn’t know why it hadn’t occurred to her to try this before. The hex of weakness, draining away her opponent’s greatest strength. Weakening them to whatever she would do next, even if it was nothing but let them drown in that surprise. Here, they expected qi uses, to be told if something was dangerous enough to be taken outside or to not use a live target. She had suggested neither, knowing she wouldn't need it, but this? This was like a distant memory finally coming to light instead of being clouded behind a veil of dreams and half-formed thoughts. Something she’d always known, but had only just realized it.
That part had him worried, she could tell, though it only showed for a moment in his eyes. She grinned a little, enjoying the fact that she’d surprised him as she launched her second attack, pushing her abilities together as she had with Preston the last time they trained. Another wind blast, the blow aimed right at the center of the X she had created. His weakened defenses left him stumbling back, the armor creating and cracking beneath the blow. She nodded and sheathed her sword, turning her attention back to the board.
“He will be fine shortly; I believe we are done. Unless you have any questions?” Her brow lifted, expecting none. She’d given them the answer to any real concern they might have with what she had done.
