There's nothing in Elias' expression that suggests he feels even the slightest bit of sympathy or empathy for Rose, even when she can't meet his eyes.
But if she did, she would have seen a hint of recognition of that same pain.

She looks up to meet his gaze, smiling bashfully and rubbing the back of her neck.
"That's why I love you!"
She didn't need to hear him say it back. She just knew she felt it.
