“Tradition, Preservation, Perseverance.”
Covering what was once Georgia and the southern part of South Carolina, New Carolina is a territory steeped in tradition and the values that had carried it through the centuries. The insular society continued to rely on their way of life and holding others at a distance when the War began, allowing them to continue their craftsmanship and sea trade without having to reach out to others when the struggles first started. However, even their luxuries and way of life began to crumble as the years passed, leaving them to eventually join in with the Accords. They are now a protectorate of Zekunft, a peaceable territory of the Big Four who appealed to their sense of diplomacy and trade over strategic warfare and mass extermination.
Living in a patriarchal society similar to the 1940’s, this territory has relied on the strength of a patriarchy to carry them through and forge a new path in their lives. Women are expected to tend to home life and have come to accept this role for the most part without question as it had served before for centuries. Currently, the leader of the territory inherits the position from birth, passing from first born son to others down the line. If no son is born or is able to inherit within three generations, the position is up for anyone to campaign for, though others have thought of trying to do so sooner, especially with the second generation already showing no signs of a son being born.
Trade is open to surrounding territories that are also aligned with the accords, but they view neutral territories with a mix of apprehension and potential gain. Seaside towns and larger cities are more likely to have military protection to protect them and maintain order. Those with either significant wealth may send their qi users to an academy, but mostly it’s seen as for those who are unable to control themselves or have dangerous powers.
That being said, it’s a similar view to how they view qi users in general: potential violence and unwanted change. They are accepted at the fringes of society only, the more moderates looking the other way while a liberal may try to reach out a helping hand. Those caught helping them are considered anathema are are lowered to the dregs of society regardless of whatever social standing they have. This also is seen as a taint on the family by association, and those who are found out are quick to cut the offenders out of their lives in hope of saving face.
The territory is known for its fishing, jewelry, and architecture. Some of the art that has been well preserved during the past twenty years and more has managed to be set up in a well-protected museum that shows the values of their culture as well as their past, the two entwined the point that it’s difficult to tell if they’re even separate. They still find a great deal of value in trade, if not more by land than sea than before.
