WOOSH!
The wind roared as a blast of sound raced through it. A dummy of hay flew back a few feet onto its back. Soni sighed.
This would be way more fun if I didn't have to retrieve it.
Muse would coo from her shoulder.
"You're no help either, missy," the girl replied looking at the creature with a raised eyebrow. "You're lucky you're pretty."
The bird just called out in what would seem like its own feathered version of a giggle.
Her arms swinging around, Soni dragged herself to the other side of the dummy and tried to blast it back upright; instead, it slid along the ground until hitting a rock, and face-planting a few feet away from her. "JUST STAND UP YOU DUMMY."
She looked at her bird. "Get it? Cus its a dummy."
It remained silent.
"You're persistent," a virile voice would call.
Soni looked over to see a taller man with a husky, but not superfluous, beard hugging his rough face, standing about 20 feet away. His hair was grey and shaggy, as if he was too old to care for how his hair looked. The rest of his look was clearly purposeful in its organization: he wore a casual tan trench coat and a suit with a vest hid under it. It was an odd attire, with the climate considered. It wasn't going to get cold anytime soon. In truth she didn't even remember what snow looked like. But, it was no matter.
Older men had a tendency to make her nervous. It'd been years since her.. bad experiences.. but it was still an inner paranoia that would probably never go away. With her fuller understanding of her powers, on the other hand, she wasn't as afraid. If worse came to worse, she could always scream his head off.
"Yea, it'd be nice if it was an actual person though. Sadly I don't know anyone who could take blasts of sound that could shake them to pieces."
The man chuckled. "Would you like to?"
Soni tilted her head and slid her hands in her pockets.
"Have you heard of the trainee board?"
Her eyes shot open. "ohhh noOO I HAD THAT SCHEDULED TODAY!"
"Oh. Well I can-"
"'SCUSE ME" she screamed as she launched past him, bouncing around with her shouts.
The man stood there, hair whipping around in the wind she caused, and his eyes squinting from the dust in the air. "Hm."
After several minutes of flying through the air via sound hops, she slowed herself with one last blast and landed on the ground. The building she had reached was an old two story mall, set up to be a perfect place for training. The second story over looked the first with only a small glass barrier. The room in the middle was huge, and walls were set up so that the trainees would not go under the second story out of view. The total area was approximately the size of a basketball court, though a square rather than a rectangle. Outside where Soni currently arrived, however, there were two large stone pillars as an entry way before going inside the doors. A couple of students waited outside; one of them was leaned against the wall reading a book, and the other was sitting against one of the pillars drawing. Both of their heads shot up as she stumbled by, quite bewildered by the sight.
She ripped open the doors and flew in, beginning her plea. "HEY I'M SO SORRY I'M LATE I WAS TRAINING AND GETTING READY FOR THIS AND JUST LOST TRACK OF TIME AND..."
A very scrawny teenager with glasses turned to see her as several clothing racks fell from mid air and onto the floor, making quite the ruckus that echoed throughout the building. Evidently, this trainee's qi needed concentration. Five other presences were surprised by her appearance, but their facial expressions were hidden by the spotlights that were cast down onto the center of the room. The doors gave a slow creak and then crash as they closed. Muse sat on Soni's shoulder, preening her chaos-ruffled feathers.
"Youuu...guys seem to be in the uh...middle of..something..." Soni muttered.
Silence was all they offered in response.
"I'll just uh..." she began as she walked backwards to the door. She opened the door behind her as she finished: "...yea okay." With that, she pushed the squeaky door to a close before letting her head fall onto the door and sighing.
"I hope you're better at fighting than you are at being professional," a familiar voice quipped behind her.
She turned around to face the bearded man from earlier, hands in his pockets, standing a few meters in front of her in the sun.
"I assure you I am far better at fighting than I am at being professional, and I'm pretty mediocre at fighting," she replied, strolling over to the wall by the door and sliding down to a sitting position. "How...how did you get here this fast anyway??"
He gave a small chuckle to her response before answering. "Do you forget people have all sorts of abilities these days?"
She nodded in surrender, though he didn't imply what exactly his was. "Touche." It was then she noticed: where were the two kids that were sitting outside?
Just then the trainee she had so rudely interrupted threw open the doors and stormed off, seeming quite defeated.
"Tough crowd?" she asked, but all she got in response was a certain finger. "Well then."
"Your turn," the man said, walking into the building.
"Wait.. what???" she asked, quite puzzled. The door he had pushed open creaked to a close, giving her nothing but silence to process what he just said.
Muse chirped a little, hopping anxiously on Soni's shoulder. Its small beady eye switched between the door and the girl with sudden motions of its head.
Confused, Soni stood up and walked in.
The door lazily shut behind her, as if it wanted to resume a nap that had been disturbed several times within the past few minutes. She slowly stepped into the light.
"It is quite fortunate that you have good recommendations from certain friends of yours," one of the trainee board members bumbled out from his audibly wide chest.
"Yea I suppose it is." she laughed nervously. It was then that the bearded man came into the center of the spotlight.
"There's only one problem," he began as a pink bracers made of some sort of energy erupted from his forearms. "You're gonna have to defeat said friend."
"Oh..." she voiced nervously. This guy was in his fifties. He had to have been experienced. The pink was a little offputting, though.
"Begin when ready, Miss Vox," one of the board members announced.
She looked at her bird for support. Its response was to look back at her, fly up to the second story barrier, and coo supportively. "Thanks." Soni murmured sarcastically, facing her opponent.
Okay, here we go.
With a single pop of her finger and no pops of her neck, (though attempts for more were made in both) she sent out a huge sonic blast toward her new made... frenemy.
It ripped through the building toward him, throwing dust across the room. Screaming through the air, it had a frequency similar to his that would make his guts feel like they were close to ripping apart. Its force was immense, enough to crush a car. When it reached him it,
essentially, did nothing. He did not even change his stance. He had his arms up and against each other, the pink shield swelling as it took the blast.
He stood there, quite smug and waiting for the next attack.
"Alright, take THIS!" she shouted as another blast was sent out, this time even louder and more intense, matching his frequency. It had an equal effect on him.
"Or how, about, THESE!" She created sound bullets for each of the three last words and shot them all at the fastest velocities she could muster. They became nothing but ripples against his energy shield.
"Alright, well, come at me. I've had my turn, now it's yours!" she taunted with a gung-ho spirit, putting her fists in the air. The wind twirled around her as she threw a sound aura up around her.
He remained where he was, answering with, "Judging by the spinning tornado of sound around you I don't think that'd be wise of me."
"Well what if-"
"And if you let it dissipate, I will remain here. I don't want to see your defense. I want to see your offense."
"Oh..." she mumbled, disappointed. The aura around her went out with a woosh, like a candle that was blown out.
"Enemies aren't always going to come at you run and gun," he added. "Some will put up a strong defense and wait for you to wear out. It's up to you to break through that defense first."
"I see." She thought for a moment. "So if I were to, say, teleport..." She glared at him as she cast her voice to behind him with a whisper that said, "Like this"
He gave a quick glance behind him, and instantly she sent out a sonic blast, but he casually blocked that equally as well as the other two. "That would be a surprise, because last time I checked, you can manipulate sound, not location. So until you cast something more than a whisper behind me, you're not going to make much progress."
But she couldn't cast anything more than a whisper... could she??
Wait.. she thought to herself. She could do a blast, and she could cast her voice... Could she do both? She could feel the power inside. She could hear in her mind where the blast would be. Not from her mouth, like her brain had adjusted to, but from a greater distance; from behind him. Did she have the power to do that kind of thing??
She was going to have to try if she wanted to get anywhere and impress the board. This better work...
She ran towards him, sending a blast forward first to warm up and distract him. It came with her own battle cry, but focusing all her qi on her goal at hand, the voice that shouted was the first one she had ever used; the voice of all those she had met before, all together, shouting at once. A legion of sounds, pitches, tones, and volumes all meshed together into the voice of an army. As the first blast rushed toward him, she cast a second blast directly behind him. They hit him at the same time, but only one was successful. That, however, was all she needed. He was launched forward, and he let out a pained grunt as he flew. She slid under the body that came at her, and as he landed she stood up. Her breath was racing and her face had determination radiating from it. She began to ready for another blast before he raised his hand: "Enough!"
His voice echoed around the room as he went to his feet. "What do you say, ladies and gents?" he asked as he fixed his trench coat. "Jacket worthy?"
After a small but significant pause, a jacket flew from the darkness of the second story to his hands. "Well done Miss Vox," a woman's voice called out.
"Good job kid," he added, tossing the jacket to her.
With excitement she put it on and examined herself in it. "Thanks," she answered, still a little surprised she had gotten it.
"Next time though," he began, making his way to the door. As he continued he rose a lecturing finger to the air, "Listen to what people have to say, and don't interrupt them by sound launching past them." He stopped to turn around and push on the door with his waist by practically falling on it. His lecturing finger pointed at her, and his eyebrows raised. "You're lucky I see potential in you."
With that he left the building, and the door came to a close.
"Wait he really said that?" she asked the board, turning around.
No response.
"...'kay... bye."
The spotlights flickered before shutting off completely, turning the room to complete darkness.
The girl sighed and Muse cooed. "Cool.."
