"Yes."
He swallowed hard but kept his gaze on her. He would not look away from her, and he would not look away from what he'd done in the past. The good and the bad were what made him who he was now. He hadn't run then, and he wouldn't run now.
"I learned that there are people that are willing to take your life and who will not blink an eye about it. It is only because one such person failed to do so that I was able to kill them when they thought I was dead. The world changes after you take a life, and it is a life I spent the good part of mine trying to spare you from. But that is a luxury I can no longer afford. That neither of us can."

'I don't want to.' The thought rang in her head and stayed there. She already knew that whether or not she wanted to changed nothing. It didn't change that war was coming, and there was a man who would destroy the happiness she remembered fondly for everyone if he was allowed to. It didn't stop the Beast from killing her family, or her. If she hesitated, she could end up dead again, and that would be it. Whatever fortune and favors she had, Evelyn doubted there woudl be a second revival if the worst happened to her.
Her stomach turned sour the more she thought about it.
She looked away after a moment, silent. She wasn't sure there were any that she could say that didn't sound ridiculous. Finally, she would nod and look up at him again.
"I understand."

"But?"
There was obviously more.

"It's just what you said." Now a shake of the head as she lifts her hands up a bit, then lets them fall to her sides once more. "I'm overthinking it, I guess. There's no real way to prepare for it. No one's asking me to like it. I don't want to, but I understand that it's going to happen no matter where I am, and if I think that, then I'm just going to end up dead again.
"It's not a power I want, but I don't want ot be dead either. Part of me wonders if I can, but when I think of him?" She shook her head again, jaw spasming in a sudden tight clench. "I want to rip his face from his skull."

"Then what do you want?"

"To make a name for myself. For me, not just as an Amtrum." Much like her hair dying before her dying.

"Then do it."

Eve had no idea what to say to what should have been obvious. Flabbergasted silence, she just looked at him for a moment.
"How?" Completely flabbergasted.

"By finding a goal that you want and doing what it takes to reach it. How do you think I got all of my names? I took them or forged them myself."

Well, she knew he didn't twiddle his thumb and make a wish.
"I guess part of me is still wants what's in the past." She shook her head. Looking behind was holding her back from what lay ahead. She knew there were things she didn't want already, just like there were things she couldn't have. But dealing with a war-torn area, and participating in the bloodshed wasn't the path she'd have seen for herself back then, either.
But that was then, and this was now. She'd had plans then, but what about now?
Now required some investigating.
"But for now, I want to stay here, with you and everyone else."

He nodded, he was happy to have her stay with him as long as she wished.
"My advice to you is to find something that you believe in. Something fundamental and become a symbol for it. Symbols have more power than any person could hope to wield. Symbols in their way never die. I've dedicated my life to becoming one, it is the only gift I have to give you to aid in your quest of ascension."

Eve nodded, her expression softening and turning thoughtful. It had been something he'd told her before that symbols were important, but she'd always just figured it was his focus. What if she applied more to it?
"Thanks, Daddy." She didn't know how long she'd stay, but it was home. That, at least, hadn't changed.
