He wasn't able to climb too much higher due to the lack of structural integrity of the higher branches. But he was able to gain about another 4 or 5 feet. As he continued along he would see it was what appeared to be some sort of kind of camp for bandits and possibly ex mercenaries. They all appeared harden and experienced. Only the children looked to be unscathed. But only those below the age of 12 or 13 by Spike's estimation.
