So this was Vindicta. Or rather, their part of it now. Joy looked over the land that had been earned thanks to Pride's proficiency with punching people. It had been pretty satisfying to see.
But just because they had land and were welcomed to this territory didn't mean it was home. Her heart twisted at the though as she tracked the beast that had scraped the bark from a nearby tree, feeling the beast rumble inside of her. She wasn't sure if it in was protest or agreement, but she felt it. She'd been feeling it for days now, every time she thought of home and the people there. The people that had betrayed them and taken everything from them.
She didn't know how Pride did it. How he kept a smile on his face and a spring in his step, other than that he'd always been that way. The growl inside grew deeper, but more of a grumble as she drew herself up.
'Enough. They are gone. He is not.' Telling both herself and the beast did nothing to make her feel better. They had times they had the same interest, and often did not. Shed fought to keep it clear who was in charge of her body, and refused any answer other than it was her. Whatever reason she had been given this power, she was herself. And here it seemed to be okay, in this place that looked down on qi.
Maybe that was part of why it didn't feel like home. Even if it was just another tool, it left her with a nagging feeling in the back of her brain.
”Well, you get points off for being Qi users, but you won't be turned away. You get points for being in control of it.” Malice's words still lingered, unsettling even as she crouched low, watching the boar ahead of her with narrowed eyes. It felt like a threat and a promise. A promise this place could be just like the home that had turned them away.
Their Mother hadn't asked for her power, or the loss of control that destroyed the village and cost her her own life. They couldn't afford that to happen to either of them. Especially Pride; he had the knack for it more than she did.
She launched herself at the boar with a shout as it rooted around for food, her arm rippling and tearing as she lashed out with her claw, lashing out at the boar and anything in her path, ignoring the gouges in her skin as it tried to fight with sharp tusks for a fleeting moment. Watching as the light died from its eyes, the smell of blood in the air as it spilled onto the ground. Rich, fertile land with a water supply that was more than home had ever had.
The beast's mind felt a brief moment of rush and elation in her mind, followed by restlessness. It had tasted blood more than once, including at the festival Pride had insisted in dragging her to. This just felt dissatisfying. A means to survive, but not enough. It wanted more. They both did.
Lifting their dinner and hoisting it over her shoulder, Joy turned towards the area they had cleared out and set up to start building on. Towards the trees that had been broken down, claw marks on the trunk. Branches scattered and cracked, tears in the earth like spiderwebs between them from when she had been clearing her head earlier. Land marked by her hand, and Pride's. Their home.
If they could take this land, then it could be taken from them, just like anything else. She would grow stronger – despite her twin's teasing, she would not let herself stay weaker if she could help it. And she couldn't be weak if she was going to defend this place and the life they would make. Take away the family they had and everything they'd worked for.
She wouldn't let them.
