For a horrifying moment the world seemed to stop as his comment echoed in her min, as casual as talking about the weather. Her cheeks drained of color until they were gray, remembering the last time she had made a fool's decision and been burned for it. Literally.

Why did he have to remind her? She swallowed the dryness in her throat, trying not to think about it and of course thinking about it all the more from trying avoid it.
