Drake took a moment to collect himself, then he would pick up Melody and keep walking. He would go into the ruins and look around looking for something to catch his eye or draw him to it. He didn't know what he was looking for but there had to be something!

The ruins were covered in plant life, but nothing like what was outside. It almost looked normal in here. There were no monsters, no scary plants. Just weeds, vines, and stairs leading upward. Always upward to the roof that would oversee the heavens.

Up the stairs he would go!

Upward he would climb and with it his fever. His body was weakening, the blight was spreading and Melody's body was growing heavier as he continued to weaken. The stairs seemed never-ending, it was far taller than any structure he had seen, even back home. The name of Skyscraper truly was apt.

Drake would stop to catch his breath. He turned to Melody wiping the hair from her face.
"I failed you once already. I will not fail you again by leaving you behind. I promise."
With that he would refocus and keep on!

It was hard, but he would eventually make it to the summit and onto the roof of the building. It overlooked the bog, and he could see that it stretched as far as the eye could see, even from this height, there were no signs of another settlement of humanity. Just unbridled nature choking the life out of what remained of humanity. What structures he could see other than Bastion were ruins and rubble. And as the day turned into twilight there was little doubt that he would not survive the forest if he ventured out at night. Not as he was now.

Drake would go to the edge and take a look around and REALLY look like the old man had told him go before. There must be something there had to be something here. She couldn't have died for no reason. He refused to believe that!

Something teased at the edge of his vision. Like a strand of gold, but it would vanish anytime her tried to focus his vision on it.

Drake would gently set Melody down and use his hand to block any extra distractions as he attempted to focus on whatever that flash if gold was...

It would take some time, enough time for the sun to set and the bog to be shrouded in a green mist. But he would begin to see it. Three strands connecting him to the three ruins he saw before. But unlike before, he had a sense that there was more. That there were more connections that he could see from here.

Drake squinted.
"Wait a minute."
He would note the three places that the Old man had pointed out before. There... were more?! Drake would look closer to see if these new connections made any sense, were they connected? Did they make a symbol?

One of the connections seemed to go to the Bastion, but it split there into dozens and dozens of smaller lines. More lines began to appear dotted through the bog and the forest, all of them connected to him. And finally, the thinnest one of all lead from him to Melody's corpse. Though he could feel that one fading, like it, had already been severed.

They were all connected... the bog the Bastion... the world... he would look out, following all the connection to see if there was a single place that they all connected to!

"So... it's me."
Drake started chuckling hysterically. As he sat in the ground putting his back against the concrete that was still warm from the sun. He would turn to Melody.
"I think I figured out how to get home."
He chuckled shaking his head.
"And wouldn't you know it. All I have to do. Is break all these connections."
He raked his hand through his hair.
"I just have to wait for everyone to die. Or kill them I suppose is the 'right answer'."
He sighed.
"I really must be going crazy. Maybe the doctor was right."
He would say to Melody.
"Here I am thinking, all I need to do, to go to a world that everyone says doesn't exist, is to kill everyone in this world!"
He would laugh again... he sighed and shook his head, pulling Melody up off the ground.
"Well, I can tell you what I'm not going to do. I'm not going to kill your world for the sake of my life. You and your people have more of a right to live than I do... I'm just a fuck up. A failure. A walking rejection. My mother never wanted me, despised and abused me. My father... to him I'm a pathetic lost cause. A waste of his time."
He looked at Melody.
"But you... you accepted me, helped me, without a second thought. You were kind... something I've never experienced before. Not without expectations of something in return... but not you..."
He gave her a tight hug as more tears began to spill.
"I already failed you once... I won't fail you again. But, if I may ask you one more time... please come with me, I'm too scared to go alone."
With those final words, still holding onto Melody, Drake would walk off the side of the skyscraper. Hopefully, he thought, with my death, your world may finally find peace... thank you He closed his eyes and waited to return to oblivion.
