With his modified crystal destroyed fending off the attack from the imposters, Preston was back to square one. Though thankfully he had acquired a second shield crystal. And while his previous improvements were lost, he was armed with more knowledge on these crystal's capabilities and restrictions. He now had some baseline on the amount of power it could contain and channel without shattering, as well as how mutable it was in its purpose. The notable thing about the shield the crystal was tuned to create was that it could absorb energy and use that energy to sustain itself growing stronger. He had counted on that when it came to amplifying it's effects with the artillery cannon and while it proved too much for it to manage, it still worked. Which meant for at least a brief period it could handle that much power.
Furthermore, he was able to create a sustained effect with it, altering the size and shape of the effect, likely placing more strain on the crystal as he expanded its capabilities. The natural question that was brought to Preston's mind was what if instead of expanding the effect to cover a larger area, what would happen if he were to reduce its affected area.
The crystal was affixed to his workbench, a large magnifying glass suspended over it to allow him to see the small details of the design clearly as well to amplify his vision on its natural energy channels. This would allow him to see any changes into the flow quicker while he was working in case he needed to adjust accordingly. Where before he had done a quick modification and improvement to the efficiency of the flow, now he sought to change the fundamental nature of it. Doing so would require more care and a steady hand.
The tool that he had for the job was something like an engraving pen with a Mana infused tip. Beside him where his notes on the crystal's previous mana structure, along with the notes of his research into the shield that it and similar crystals could produce. The baseline of his work, below those notes, was his formula for his proposed improvement, complete with the new runes that he would etch into the crystal and the directions he wished to cause the energy flow to follow.
The work of carving these new runes and energy flows was a time-consuming endeavor, one that required his full concentration lest his hand slip and a mistake caused the energy flow of the crystal to feed into itself and cause an explosion. To that end, he was working in his room with his Barker Sprite outside to intercept anyone that may come knocking with their asinine requests. They had both gone over his plans several times and he was confident the soundness of his design, even without Sean looking over his shoulder. Only one of them could do this part of the job anyway, so it was decided Sean was better used at this stage to ensure that he had the work environment that he needed to create his new prototype. One that if it proved sufficiently useful enough he would then put forward for mass production for Ayatlan battle mages and Cabal forces. If Project Judgement and the Blackwater incursion had proven one thing, it was that the peace they had enjoyed after the war was crumbling. And if a war was to come again then he would see to it that the insurrection was stamped out violently and swiftly before it could send his home crumbling down.
Slowly and with great care and precision, Preston would etch into the crystal. Working the new runes a layer into the crystal before pulling in his energy from the surrounding world, attuning himself to the Holy Element and infusing the crystal with that mana to repair it and the etchings. Then once more etching the crystal with his runes, pausing frequently to confirm with his notes and to inspect the crystal. Each cycle of etching and repairing the crystal was separated by an inspection of the crystal to ensure his etchings did not remain on the crystal. With each cycle of inscribing and removal, the mana imprinting from the tip of his pen would saturate deeper and deeper into the crystal. This was important because not only was he imposing a purpose and an order on to this crystal and how it functions, but he was also erasing and overwriting the previous function and purpose of the crystal. Every cycle of etching his runes and restoring the crystal peeled away a layer of previous magic and ingrained his new spell into it.
It was tedious work, but it was imperative to do so to ensure that the crystal would function to the task at peak efficiency and to prevent it from overloading or wearing out after a short time. Should the prototype prove worthwhile for mass production it will be easier to create with fresh crystals.
The process took the better part of a day, his progress slowly being etched and erased from the face of the crystal as he imprinted his intent one layer at a time into it. The stunt he pulled with the cannon proved that it could handle a large surge of energy and that its energy could penetrate through the human body and mingle with and effect the lifeforce of a person in a way that wasn't outright lethal. So this crystal would be his prototype for a crystal that could store energy indefinitely and be used at a later time by the wielder. Using the fundamentals of his own support magic as the base of the theory he wished to create something that would be able to push himself, and eventually others past their own physical limitations. Given the varied nature of many of their forces, and the guerilla tactics the insurgents seemed to be favoring at the moment, he believed something like this would prove far more useful than a simple shield. Or at least have a much wider range of uses, in and out of a war.
Once the crystal was finished he would take it off of the workbench and give it a final inspection before letting out a sigh of relief. It appeared to be solid and for the enchantments to have taken. Now, all that was left was to try it and with a lack of willing or knowing participants that meant that the honor and obligation of the first test and its risks fell to him.
"Sean, it is time."
With his head held high and without hesitation or remorse Preston would infuse the Crystal with his energy. It was the moment of truth.

(non\Elemental Damage)
Prototype Shield Crystal (Permanent Consumable) - By spending one Qi Use the user can place a shield between themselves with the durability of their Energy stat at the time of activation.
