"I do know her. Very well."
He laughed.
"Tricky answers....tell me, if one person could die this instant, at your word....who would it be?"

She froze, staring at him, grip on the bracelet tightening along with the clench of her jaw.
"What do you mean, do? She was captured. Why would she just leave? You're wrong." Liar, liar pants on fire. Sadly, Tina felt the press of thoughts rush in, but not enough to forget she owed an answer. Lucky bastard.
"I would choose the person who decided Leyak needed to die." Her hands clenched into fists. "And I'd want them to know exactly why they were dying."

Thunder started rolling in his body, his eyes flickering with anger.
"I never lie, little girl."
He slowly shrank as she answered, then looked out the window.
"And what would you say to them?"

Noted. Tina remained silent, unmoving. Unflinching. She knew what she had seen of him in the dream, but that didn't change her answer or her feelings. If he thought she was just going to magically believe him for every single detail, then he thought she was either younger than she was, or dumb. Maybe both. She could feel his emotion vibrating in her skull with every syllable. Also rude. She grunted and rubbed at her face with her hand.
"That depends. How do you know my mother?" A simple answer with much under the surface? Oh yes. If he was going to ask her another question right after that, she was going to call him out on his own leeway with the rules.
"The truth, and the story to go with it. You didn't give the story."

She didn't argue, then made a fair point.
"Fair. I know your mother because her capture was a precursor to a great battle that happened nearby. I was part of the 55th regiment, which overran that area. We killed the men who took your mother and then recruited her. She still lives in 74, a prisoner there as much as any of us."
He tilted his head to the side.
"If you could have one of these things- would it be to free her, or to get this one who killed Leyak?"

She drank in the information he gave like water when a dying man was in the desert, though the frown returned. She was a prisoner? That might explain it. And territory 74 again. She shifted, more questions rising up and shut down with the simple question of choice. She stopped, finger hooked as it went to her chin. The teen looked down with a thoughtful hum.
"Neither, because I will have both," she decided after a moment, nodding as she looked up at him. If he wanted an answer, he might need to rephrase the question. She sighed, leaning back to stretch and already anticipating his irritation.
"If you mean what I would want first or most, it's the same. If you're offering one to help with or provide information for, then how I can free my mother, because I have a few leads for Leyak." She sighed and rolled her shoulders. Too much talking. Not enough explosions.
"You said she's a prisoner in 74. What do you mean?"

"Most of us sprites get torn and turned into something different. A few of us get tethered to another person. And a very rare few get to be both. Our souls are turned to Sprites but our bodies remain, if they're important. Your mother is one such a person."
He sniffed.
"But from what I hear, 74 won't be around much longer. They'll crumble to dust, and everyone and everything there will be utterly destroyed."
He grinned.
"But if you want....I can take you there. To your mother."

Her eyes narrowed, taking in explanation and offer alike.
"What would it cost me, and why would you offer?"

"Your soul." He tilted his head.
"I have told you the truth but you have no reason to trust me. I will give her to you first, and in return you'll give me your soul."
He stared.
"As to why....that's two questions. and our exchange is over, for now. Instead, you can make a choice. Save your mother, grow old with her and die- to find your soul in my care. Or don't, and let her disappear again."

She'd gone over half her life without her mother already, even if the pain was there for him to feast off of. So the game was over, and they were back on their own sides. She tilted her head to the side, then shook her head with a snort.
"You're offering me a chance to grow old with some woman I barely remember for the sake of my soul? I can find better - and worse - deals back home."

"Then accept it for Leyak....because I could bring him back too."

She leaned in at the offer resting her hand on her palm, smile gone. He was very fond of things that hurt inside. She'd make a note to do something better with the bracelet next time. The skull ring on her finger proclaimed her as Princess Badass, a reminder of who he was dealing with and who had crowned her so.
"Leyak's dead. What if he's not the same if you do?"

His smile faded at the ring.
"I can bring him back....exactly as he left. You see...I can manipulate the forces of Time, to an extent."
He kept staring at the ring. His stomach growled. He started reaching out for the ring.

"No," Tina said flatly, pulling her hand away as the man leaned in. Her eyes narrowed like a cat's.
"Come any closer for it and I'll shoot you." It was a heartfelt promise.

"........." He froze, then slowly leaned back.
"I can prove it."
