It was finally the first Saturday of Soni's school year. She wasn't sure how Saturdays worked at Cooblah, but after the week she had, she definitely needed a break. It was also hot here in 259, so she decided that she'd take her break somewhere a little cooler. And she knew just the spot. From what she had researched, there was a spot in the training grounds where the cold winds of the tundra brushed up against the edge of a rainforest. That sounded like the perfect place. She could go fully into the tundra, but it was far too cold and bland for her taste. And she could go fully into the rainforest, but it was too hot and humid for her taste. So this in-between was a perfect "Goldilocks" zone, with the cool breeze of the tundra but the beautiful scenery and nature of the jungle.
Soni, after about three hours of trekking through all sorts of climates, finally got there, with a small backpack just big enough to carry a couple of books, which was perfect considering she just used it to carry one book and a lunch shake. She felt the cool breeze lightly kiss her skin; relief swept over her. After taking a relaxed breath, Soni looked for a tree to climb, which she found quite quickly.
She launched herself up to the lowest branch, grabbed hold of it, and pitifully shimmied her way up it with what little muscle she had. When she got up there, the masked girl looked around to make sure she was alone. Not seeing anyone, she slid her mask down and breathed in, letting the cold breeze brush against her tainted cheeks. Her face contorted as if to smile, though without a mouth smiling wasn't really doable.
Taking her backpack and setting it between her legs that hung off either side of the branch, Soni leaned back on the tree. She took out her shake and began the difficult process (though one she had gotten accustomed to) of covering up five of the cavities and using the last one to drink through the straw. To normal people the shake would probably be disgusting, but without a tongue, taste wasn't important.
As she drank her eyes wandered around the green jungle, fascinated with the sounds of the jungle. The multitudes of birds of all sorts, tweeting and cooing away to each other in their own little world, in their own little ways; the bugs, chirping a symphony of quick successions of clicks; the frogs, some tiny and some much bigger, croaking into the wilderness to find a mate or warn others of their own dangers; the leaves applauded as the wind raced around them; the branches creaked as their outstretched arms were danced upon by the wildlife; then there were the mammals' calls. Some, mutated by Qi, were warped and strange and mystical; others were normal, yet exotic and foreign to Soni. The laughing of the monkeys, the roars of the bigger cats; she could even hear the hippos from the distant lake that was half in the jungle climate and half in the plains climate. There was also the rumbling of the thunder in the far distance. A rainstorm was sure to come soon, most likely within the next hour or so, which meant she'd have to put her reading on pause, but with this symphony of sound around her, her interest in her book dwindled anyway.
Soni began to play around with the sounds she now had in her mind. She focused mainly on the calls of the birds; she mimicked them, combined them, changed their pitches, and made her own call. After all, she didn't want a bird thinking she was a mate, because that definitely was not the case.
Suddenly, after Soni sent out her own unique signature call, it came back. Her eyes immediately widened a little. Her attention peaked. Her neck became a swivel for her head. She sent out the call again, and it had the same result; something called it back. But how? She made it herself. It wasn't one that already existed, surely. That would be against all odds. A third time she sent out her call, and the sound came back, this time revealing the culprit.
A beautiful blue and white bird (see here) came fluttering out from behind the large leaves that were coated in water. The elegant creature was definitely Qi influenced; it seemed to be a sort of hawk with the abilities of a mocking bird, but the colors and tail were like none other. It sat on a branch not far from Soni and looked at her curiously. It sent out Soni's call to her, as if to ask "Was it you who I heard?"
Soni looked at the bird with bewilderment and fascination. She chirped her call in response as if to say "Yes."
The bird happily welcomed the confirmation as it flapped over and onto Soni's backpack. The girl's confusion melted into pure childlike wonderment as she held out her finger, and the bird flew up and perched on it. "So that's it, huh?" Soni asked it as she lightly pet it. "You and me are best friends now?"
The feathered creature closed its eyes and nuzzled Soni's hand as she pet it. The blonde giggled. "You don't even care about my scary face?"
It continued in its welcome of her embrace, and the girl continued to pet it. "Awe, thank you. Well, I don't know how long you wanna hang around, but I should probably name you. Hm.. how about... Artemis?" Soni inspected the bird. "Mmm...nah you don't really seem like the "goddess of the hunt" type. Hm... Echo?" The girl thought again. "No... she has a depressing story. I could call you Siren, but you don't really seem like the type to lead people to their doom. You're too pretty for that." Soni chuckled. "Then again, I guess that's kind of the point huh? How about Muse? They were in charge of telling stories and they had a lot to do with music and song and dance, and birds like all those things, right?" she asked her new found friend. The bird cued their call in response, then flapped up to Soni's shoulder and settled.
The girl chuckled in response. "Alright, Muse it is then." She nodded. After sticking the lunch shake back in her bag, she took out the book that she had gotten from the library with the help of Trinity, and began reading, letting the jungle sooth her and her feathered comrade.
