He reached up, taking off his crown and looking at it a moment before dropping it in his lap.
"You know, I didn't want to be a King."
He folded his arms.
"Back during the great war, 71 was under the thumb of a brutal warlord. I, being the generous idiot I am, lead an army that liberated them. They elected me king without my consent. Rather than take over, I set up a provisional government and let them rule themselves. Then, I left, never intending to return." He rolled his eyes. "Throughout my years here, they've continued sending updates. Sending me a copy of the constitution, looking forward to my return. Every week, a new report, a new letter. Kids sending paintings and people send flowers, jewels." He chewed his lip.
"The people there are kind, and fair, and just. Good people." He glanced at Tina. "Cabal is...very different. They have needed me so long, that I've grown attached to the place. Still, I understand the politics. I understand what my position means. Asiv is the leader of this country- as a student and a citizen, can you honestly say having your leader step in to supersede me doesn't make you question what I did or didn't do to deserve it? It shakes the faith that people have felt, and put me in a very awkward position. Either I stay, and appear as nothing more than a figurehead who's word means nothing compared to our great leader...or I leave, and appear to abandon my post."
He shrugged.
"Leaving means the people have one voice, one person to focus on. They can see strength and stability without the question of authority. I didn't leave to go back and rule a country because I can't have power here- truth is, nobody wants another free Dragon serving Cabal, and I did what's best for it's people and the students here."
He would take the crown and put it on his head.
"So. King David it is. Still, I'd not want to bounce without giving an offer to one of a handful of my protege's here. And yes Princess boom-boom, you're one in my eyes." He'd cock a brow and smirk. "Wanna come to 71? You can train there with me, have your own room in my castle. You'd be out of the war zone, and I could even teach you about the life of a royal....for when you have a territory of your own."
And he had absolute faith she would, someday.

Why in the world would he not want to be king? He was already in charge of an academy, and seemed to think he knew what it took to rule a Territory. Now he was admitting that it was an unwanted role with strangers, forced upon him and doted on in secret. It sounded like the people there even liked him and wanted him. He climbed to the top through his actions and just wanted to shy away from all that came with it? Why?
"It says you two don't agree. Depends on what it was. Maybe you're right and he needs his ass kicked. Maybe you need to step back." Tina shrugged at his question, the little blonde's shoulders no longer as thin as they had been when she'd first arrived, though she'd not been starving.
"Seriously?" The disbelief and morbid curiosity showed on her face and tone. He was offering her a place to just pack up and go instead of heading back home. Home that she still loved and intended to go back to. A place to be swept up by even more rules and proper dictation - same as whatever waited for her in her mother's territory. He was just going to offer it like that?
"That kind of something doesn't come for nothing." She shook her head, still sort of surprised he felt that way. She figured he'd have left her with the rest after the midnight escapade with the last qi sprite she'd really dealt with. "Besides, how are they not happy with a free Dragon ruling a country instead of working for another one?"

David stared.
"It does from me."
He looked off.
"I already told you, I'm not like the people here. I've also told you that you can trust me. You have potential to be someone great- even greater than me, or Leon, or Asiv. It's shoulders like yours on which the future hangs. Our time is over."
He let out a slow breath.
"I have a vested interest in that future. Training you, passing on my knowledge and experience and strength...it's important to me. Training the people here did that- but to be honest, I don't see many others who care to take up the mantle. I think you could, if you wanted. As for the people here- they are happy. One supervisor, one ruler. And a Dragon on the other side of the continent. They are...content."

Tina stared right back at him, waiting for his response and cocking her head like a squirrel on coffee as the Dragon admitted he was an exception. How the world was moving on without them, their time past. Her tow wiggled in her shoe as she shifted to have both arms resting on her knees, hugging them to her chest instead.
"Yeah, I don't really want to be a Dragon." They were kind of full of themselves. Besides, things worked back home just fine. She shook her head and hopped up to her feet in a singular motion, but didn't dart away.

"And I don't blame you. Nobody wants to be one- you just....are one. Or become one."
He grinned.
"I'm sure you'll be one, someday. You have the spirit."

"Tch." Tina rolled her eyes as she leaned back. One thing she had picked up over the years was not to revere or loathe the dragons so much as not be impressed by them.
"If I make a name for myself, it'll be my own." Meaning, of course, that she would.

He laughed.
"Fair enough. People tend to have significant prejudice against the Dragons and their titles, because of who we are. Mathew is self-absorbed, callous, disconnected from the world. A right prick. Leon is practically insane, from what I understand, and has no problem hurting people beyond what is necessary- also a prick. And I can't find fault in my actions, running the world with a hypocrites mentality. Very much a prick."
He smirked.
"If you want your own name, I understand it. At first I thought someday, you might take mine. But it doesn't seem you'd find the same value in it."
He sighed.
"Still, pricks all, you can'y deny we're strong. And saying no to a chance to learn and grow from one of us shouldn't be done lightly."

She smirked at his laugh, enjoying the fact he was getting of the martyr horse and getting real. She laughed as he described Mathew, Leon, and himself - Elder Dragons not known for their social graces. As David put it, they were all pricks. Which meant it was something she could understand.
"At least you're honest about it." She gave a small cackle, then shook her head. No, she wouldn't be taking anyone else's name. Not in the foreseeable future, and certainly not in a way that would take her away from the fighting.
"I can be a prick, too," she assured him with a confident nod. She knew he wasn't thrilled with her answer, but it was what it was. "You've got this, though."

David sighed.
"I'm not worried about it. Still, you'll be missed- I could use someone willing and able to blow shit up and keep my staff on their toes."
A laugh followed.

She paused for a moment, considering.
"I mean, I'm not saying no to that."

He stood, chuckling.
"Obviously. You're welcome in 71 anytime, you know. Just put your hand on the gate, it'll open for you, yeah?"
He sighed.
"Time for me to go."

"Coo." She bounced up to her feet as David rose, nodding at the open invitation. You never knew when that could come in handy. She peeked out over the edge of the roof again, then back to David.
"You want another distraction so they don't see you?"

He shook his head. "Best I just....get it over with. Meetings im late for call anyway." He would look down at his crown, then smirk. Putting his hands on either side, he shrunk it slightly, infusing it with his power. Then, he'd reach over and remove her Tin foil crown, placing his on her head. "There. Now you'll have to visit someday, bring me back the crown." He smirked and took to the air by walking off the roof, wind, wrapping around his form just before he hit the ground and letting him gently touch down. He would stick a hand in his pocket and start walking toward the guards, raising his other hand to her and giving a little wave.

"Lame." She rolled her eyes but let him go. No tears, no changing her mind, no emotional farewell. Nothing that one might expect from a fourteen year old to show. Her eyes narrowed as the crown was removed and shrunk, her foil one replaced despite its resilience in staying on her head so far as he placed the new one atop her head, instead.
What the hell was this? Tina immediately pulled the crown from her head to look at it more closely, not recognizing what it was made of and --- SERIOUSLY?! A DRAGON MOTIF?!
Rude, sir.
She watched David descend, sticking her tongue out at him as he waved and kept on walking.
"BETTER GO FAST, BOI." Because Tina respects authority.
Until next time.

David loosened the tin foil crown....and put it on.
He smirked at her shout, but kept walking, his men finding him (quite relieved) and surrounding him, as they made their way back toward the academy.
