Gidget's head jerked back to WR the moment they nudged her, but the insecurity was gone from her eyes. She looked like she was calculating something, like she did when she got too invested in code at home. She nodded a single time, then turned her attention to her mother, given that she was the last one to speak.
"Mother. Why isn't my brother in any of these pictures?" she asked, suddenly.

WR hesitated slightly at the question, not out of embarrassment or uncertainty, but because they weren't sure exactly how to word it. The moment they opened their mouth to speak, Gidget had chimed in with her question, and they simply shrugged it off and sat back into the couch, allowing them their conversation.

"Whatever do you mean dear. Your siblings are in most of these pictures. Yours is the only face that is unsurprisingly absent..."

Gidget glanced at her mother, giving a shake of her head. She released WR's hand and walked over to one of the pictures, of the entire family at the Grand Canyon.
"This trip. I remember this trip. At least, I remember you guys going on it. And Scott was DEFINITELY there. Why isn't he in this picture?"

WR fell silent and raised a brow as they watched Gidget walk over to the pictures.
Strange. Her brother went missing, and now this... something was definitely up, but it wasn’t WR’s place to say anything. Yet.

"Scott? Whose that? One of you other John's?"
Her father would scoff. The mother would just look confused.
"You must be tired dear. Did you take any... medication before coming here?"

"I don't do drugs, Mother. You know that."
Gidget spoke almost off-handedly, focused instead on the picture on the wall. She remembered this picture. She was almost certain she had a copy of it in her own home, tucked away with the rest of the pictures, carefully wrapped up and hidden in the safe in her closet. She KNEW Scott had been there.
Then, it hit her, and she turned around to look at her parents again, brows furrowed in confusion. "Scott. My brother. My OLDEST brother. The CIA agent that you are so proud of. Why isn't he in ANY of these pictures?" Her tone was a bit desperate, and there was genuine fear in her violet eyes.

WR had never met Scott before, but they could confirm that he did, in fact, exist, and was, in fact, Gidget's oldest brother. At first, they were confused, but then, they were concerned. Their eyes darted between Gidget, her mom, and her dad, then back again.
Their eyes narrowed and they shifted in their seat.
“If this is a joke it’s NOT funny.”

"Boy how about you shut your mouth and mind your manners. There is no joke happening here except for the two of you acting like you're anything other than degenerates that are going to live miserably and die young."
The father would snap at WR. The mother would shake her head.
"Sweet heart, if you aren't feeling well, maybe we should take you to a doctor, you know we've only had three children. I'm afraid that you might be on something, and if you weren't the one taking then maybe your... friend here might've slipped you something."
She would say looking to WR as she spoke.

Gidget gave a fierce shake of her head.
"Stop it. Stop all of this. What are you two even TALKING about? SCOTT. My BROTHER. Stop going back and forth about all of this 'you're not good enough' shit. I get it. I'm not perfect. You don't approve of my partner. Fine. We can get back to that shit in a SECOND. Let's stay focused on my BROTHER here. Why isn't Scott in any of these pictures?"
She was obviously shaking, fighting the urge to hyperventilate.

WR stood from their seat and crossed their arms over their chest, their hate filled eyes narrowed at Gidget's father while they walked to Gidget's side to, hopefully, somewhat comfort her. They weren't even going to justify the slander with a response. At this point, it wasn't worth it.
"Jumping to conclusions starts wars. Jusayin'."
Even though they were being absolute dipshits about it, her parents were obviously as confused as they were. What the FUCK was going on? It was almost as if Scott just didn't exist.

The mother would stand up and hold her hands up as she approached as if trying to sooth a cornered animal.
"Sweetie... I think we should get you to a doctor. The person you're talking about isn't real honey... How about we take a moment to cool off and we can all go to the clinic together, ok?"

Gidget narrowed her eyes at her mother, her tiny body quivering. She shook her head fiercely from side to side.
"I'm fine. I'm not going to a clinic, Mother. I'm just... just fine." She turned to look at WR, pure desperation in her gaze. She didn't know what to do here. Her parents were acting like Scott never existed, but she KNEW he did. She had the hoodie he gave her. She had the pictures of them together, safe and locked away. She still had the gaming mouse he bought for her, years ago, despite it being obsolete.
Scott. The only redeeming factor of this family. The only person on her side. And he was gone. She was starting to hyperventilate slightly, fighting the kind of anxiety she hadn't known in years.

WR read the desperation in Gidget's eyes and tilted their head slightly, taking another gaze around the room, from her parents, to the pictures, to all the tacky decor. They eventually shook their head and wrapped an arm around Gidget's waist, pulling her into them lightly as she started to hyperventilate.
"Mind if we step outside for a sec?" They said. Not asking. And if either of them tried to stop them, WR would push them out of the way.

Neither parent moved, in fact it would look like they were almost relieved to not have to deal with whatever bullshit those two were on.
