Gidget allowed WR to lead her outside, and by the time she got through the front door, her shaking had only managed to get worse. Every time her parents had become too much, Scott was there to defend her. It suddenly made sense why her father was so outrageously insulting, so cruel. It wasn't old age getting the better of him... Her shield was gone. Scott had buffered nearly every interaction she had with her parents, and with him quite literally out of the picture, they had no reason to watch their words.
Which meant that everything he said was his true opinion of her, how he had actually felt about her this entire time. She had thought, once, that she would be able to do something right, that she would be able to prove to them that she was worthy, that she was good enough... and she was wrong. She was a failure, a mess-up. She was a stain on their perfect family.
She couldn't hold back the tears. Scott was gone and they were acting like she was insane. Her father was finally able to voice how he really felt. It was as if everything she had tried to build for herself was slipping through her fingers, and she felt small, helpless. She nearly collapsed against WR, soundlessly, the tears streaming down her face.

WR led Gidget outside and down the porch stairs, where they would fall to their knees on the gravel and pull Gidget close, allowing her to cry into their chest. They weren't really sure what was going on, in fact they were far from having a clue. This was like one of those movie clichés, except it was impossible to guess what was going to happen next. All they knew was that Gidget's world was crushed, and they needed to be there for her while they tried to piece together exactly what the fuck was happening.
"Hey, we're gonna figure this out, okay? It's gonna be okay. We're gonna find him."
They cooed, protectively wrapping their arm around her neck to wipe some of the tears away from her eyes.

Gidget continued to cry silently, the effort of it shaking her shoulders as she leaned into WR's chest. Her entire body was quivering, and for a moment, she just sat there, her eyes wide but unseeing as she went over everything again and again in her head.
It took her some time to calm herself down, and by the time she did, she turned her face into their neck, burying it there. She slowly lifted one arm to wrap around them, but the embrace was weak.
"I... I want to go home, WR... Please, can we go home?"

WR sat in silence, continuing to wipe her tears away with one hand, and massaging the top of her head with the other. They weren't really sure what to say, so they didn't, and simply allowed their presence to act as a calming agent until she gathered enough strength to pull herself together.
When she wrapped her arm around them, they shifted all of her weight on theirs, practically carrying her to her feet.
They nodded in response to her question, worry filling their eyes as they contemplated what came next.
"Do you want me to stay with you tonight?"

Gidget stared at the ground, her gaze a mix of agony and fear. She knew she would have to pull herself together, to figure this out... but for now, she was crippled with the pain in her chest, unable to process everything that had happened.
"Please... stay with me. Don't leave me." As soon as the words left her mouth, both arms went around WR, and she clung to them, as if they would disappear if she let go.

"Never," WR assured, nuzzling her hair. As she clung to them, they opted to pick her up and carry her bride style, if she let them, so she could gather her strength. If she chose to dissolve in the closeness, they would allow it, and give her silence while they walked back to the apartments.
"Is there anything else I can do?" They asked, their empathetic gaze grazing over her shriveling vessel.

Gidget didn't squeak or protest, didn't whine or cry. It was unlike her, to let someone carry her, and there was a traitorous part of her brain that whispered You're too heavy, you know that. Instead, she buried her face into WR's neck, still shaking.
The girl barely weighed ninety pounds, and most of that weight came from her cybernetic enhancements. Picking her up like that for the first time, WR would be able to feel every rib, and the way her waist sunk in beneath them. She looked frail, but they would be able to FEEL it for the first time: she was nothing but skin, bones, and metal pieces.

WR knew Gidget was a feather, but she weighed almost nothing, and it took them by complete surprise. The way her body sunk into theirs, the way it reacted to the pressure of their grasp, it was almost as if she were a sack of bones. She had no mass, and therefor, no strength. It was no wonder she was so insecure about her abilities.
That was a conversation for a later day, though, and they were going to pay better attention to her eating habits and workout routine, which would be much easier now since they were going to be staying with her anyway. They contemplated many thoughts while they protectively held Gidget in their arms, allowing the silence to feed them.
After a few, wordless minutes, they eventually made it back to the apartments, up the stairs, and to Gidget's room, where they would finally set her down.

Gidget immediately reached out, grabbing ahold of her jacket. She had lovingly set it on her bed before leaving, but pulling it against her, she snuggled into it almost like it was a security blanket. The tears started again, but these were less from anxiety and more from grief. She pressed the article of clothing into her face, breathing in deep.
"Scott... Scott gave this to me..." she said softly, her voice almost muffled from the jacket. "He is real.... My brother is real..."

WR briefly glanced around the room before taking a seat on the edge of Gidget's bed. Truthfully, they had no idea how to handle the situation. For years, they struggled mourning Sylvye's death, but it was much different when someone existed one moment, and never did the next. Although, WR was convinced he had been kidnapped, and measures were taken to ensure he wouldn't be looked for.
...
But then, there was Gidget. Her parents' memories must had been wiped, or something, but Gidget remembered. That was the strangest part.
They shook their head. It was difficult to say since they had never met her brother themself, but they had no reason not to trust Gidget on it.
But, as with everything else, they would push it aside for later.
For now...
"He is, and we're going to find him. It's going to be okay."

Her room was painfully unfurnished. Her bed was a sheeted mattress on the floor with one large, comfy looking blanket, and more pillows than any one person would need. There were games strewn about her floor, and charging cables to different things plugged into the wall... but other than those, there was nothing. No pictures, nothing superfluous or specific. It was like most of the rest of her home: bare.
Gidget nodded, and her hand reached out, suddenly, to grab at WR. She pulled them close to her, wanting to feel them against her... needing to have something solid to believe in, to trust... and she cried. This time, her body was wracked with sobs, and there was no holding back. Gidget no longer knew what to do, and the thought that she had to figure SOMETHING out, had to identify the next step, weighed heavy on her, making what she was feeling even worse.
She felt lost, hopeless, and in that moment... WR was the only thing keeping her from going into the bathroom and doing something stupid.

WR fell into Gidget, pulling her close as she did them. They embraced her tightly, and closed their eyes, cradling her head in their arms. Somehow, they felt even closer this way. They could almost feel her tears as if they were coming out of their own eyes, and her heartbeat grew louder, as if it were trying to synch with their own. In that moment, they felt a few tears leak out of their eyes, and their face scrunched up in sorrow.
"I've got you. It's okay. I'm real, and I'm never leaving you. I'll face this nightmare with you, forever and always. Please don't give up. Please don't lose faith. Please don't stop loving yourself. I love you, I need you, and that's very much real,"
They almost choked on the words. What started as cooing became something a lot more real. In truth, they didn't know how to comfort Gidget, and that terrified them. They were terrified of losing her, of watching her fall into the darkness where she very much did not belong. They just wanted to wash her pain away, but unfortunately, that was something far out of their ability.
They curled their body around hers, their sobs becoming much more prevalent.
"If you need anything, tell me. I'd get the moon for you if you wanted it."

Gidget clung to WR, sobbing into them. She heard their words, felt their tears, but it was as if they were so very far away. She had no idea what to do, where to go from here. Her sobbing continued, quieting steadily, until... at last... she fell quiet.
Somehow, she had managed to cry herself to sleep, her tiny body giving in to the grief and the exhaustion in the only way it could. Her breathing continued to shake and shiver for a short while, but after some time, her muscles relaxed. Lying in WR's arm, with her jacket pressed against her face and soaked in a mixture of both of their tears, their comforting presence finally seemed to shift something, deep inside her unconscious mind.
She made a soft noise in her sleep, pressing herself further into them and nuzzling gently against their chest. If WR listened closely, that sound might have almost sounded like "love...."
