Reaching the hospital had been easy. But the phone call had kept going through her mind, the voice of the friendly nurse playing the words over and over. The blood results were in. Whether or not she had any STDs or was pregnant would all be pulled out in the open here.
Her flats struck the floor quietly as she walked. One hand looped in the front pocket of her jeans...the other holding onto Valekin's hand. They would have almost looked like a couple to anyone in the hospital. A preppy, pretty little blonde with a Gothic looking bad boy. Happened often enough right?
She stopped at the door they had been told to go to. Here was where it would all be said. Where everything...would be known. Kate was scared...just a little. Not because of the STDs...no, she didn't worry about that kind of shit, but more if she was pregnant or not. It was a big thing for her... to become a mother at a young age or not. She'd be almost 20...considering her birthday was in a week...
"Thanks for coming Vale..."
She would have squeezed his hand, bright eyes just staring at the door. It was hard to open... not physicaly...but rather a mental obstacle to over come. Maybe even an emotional one.

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
The hospital staff was loathing his presence. So far he had already scared one old man into a heart attack. Now he was wondering how many more people he could subliminally convince to go into cardiac arrest. The nurses weren't too pleased to see him. In fact one turned very pale.
One looked at him as if he was the guy Kate was sleeping with. Which was technically true, There just wasn't anything going on. Just friends snoozing in the same bed due to a lack there of. He was entirely prepared to bring her home all upset and teary. Moody, and completely uncontrollable. The bearer of that bad news was getting a very nasty look.

Kate opened the door, and stepped inside. Vale was there, and he wasn't going anywhere. That helped her as she saw the friendly doctor wave them in.
"Come in, come in."
A friendly middle aged man. Kate walked in, expecting Vale to shut the door behind them. Quietly, she sat down on the chair and looked at the doctor. He held the papers in his hands. Just held the few sheets as if they were nothing at all. And yet they were everything. Absolutely everything to Kate. One out come would be that life would move on as normal...that everything would be fine.... nothing would have to change.
But the other would turn her world upside down. Already her head felt like spinning. Funny how that was, right? The blonde took a deep breath, and that's when the doctor finally noticed how tense she was.
"Been trying for a child for awhile?"
That startled her. Her bright green eyes looked at Vale for a moment as her mind registered what he had asked. Did they really look like a couple that much? Or that old for that matter?
"No...It's something completely different, sir. He's here for support..."
The doctor scratched his head before shrugging and continuing on to the information.
"Well alright, let me tell you right now that you don't have any STDs. That's always the best in my opinion."
And she perched on the edge of the chair, bright eyes wide. Next would be the information that she really wanted to hear. Was she pregnant or not? Kate felt like snatching the paper from him to see.

Vale had closed the door as was expected. He looked around the room; the usual things were there. The doctorate degrees hung on the walls, various text books that he felt like swiping to learn a little more. He was listening, just preoccupied with what he was doing. Which was visually raping the room.
"So far I don't have to bury you doc."
He said, looking at a diagram of the human heart. He picked up the model, and took it apart, reading the labels, and then putting it back together. He was rather eccentric in any kind of medical setting. Considering this was the field his degree was in. Field medicine. Which was the treating of serious wounds on the battlefield. Yes; it's an art in Serbia. If you fuck up; they're dead anyway. If you don't... Well then you have someone like Vale walking around.
"Now for the ten million dollar answer."
The doctor could take his time, but he was starting to feel like the guy was trying to prolong it. Not sure of how he should answer.

Kate glanced over at Vale and an eyebrow arched. He seemed to want to know the answer just as much as she. A little smile, just a little. It was good to have your best friend around.
"Yes... well... You're pregnant!"
A smile from the doctor. Such a huge smile. After all, children were a wonderful thing for people! Kate's face froze in horror, that small little smile seeming so different.
It was then that she blocked everything out. It would all be "blah, blah, blah" to her. Every last word. There was a dull look in her eye as she just stared at the smiling doctor's face. And his smile dropped. He didn't know she had been raped. He didn't know that she didn't want a kid!
"Um...is there...something wrong Miss McHallin?"[/green]
If Valekin did anything...Kate wouldn't even notice.

"Thank you for your time doctor. Those reports belong to us."
Valekin noticed her plight almost immediately, as she kinda froze right where she was instead of breaking down in tears and such. He took the paper work, almost forcefully, and stared down the doctor, daring him to go further. Just so he'd have a reason to maul the guy's face off. He folded up the reports, and stuck them in his pocket. Then took a hold of her hand.
"Come on Kate, let's go. We got what we came for."
The tactic of whispering right into the ear and covering the other practically always worked on people that were frozen like that. He used the method when dealing with soldiers suffering from shell shock. Which is a temporary neurological affliction that numbs almost all the senses from input. Putting the person so far in their own head that they lose touch with reality for a little while.
He just wanted to get her out of the hospital before someone needed to be hospitalized.

"Huh? Oh....right... leaving."
She stood up, thanking the doctor quietly before heading for the door. It was like with each foot step she heard it all over again. You're pregnant. Kate was going to be a mother at the age of 19... because that birthday was just around the corner. Nine months-ish from now... Kate would have a kid.
She squeezed Valekin's hand as she walked out the door. Her feet just kept going, not slowing down. Kate was in a different kind of shock now. Why? Because the facts were the facts...and she was not aborting the baby or giving it up for adoption. Kate just wasn't that kind of girl.
The blonde walked past every one... the only voice that would snap her out of this new kind of trance would be Valekin's. He was the one person who could keep her sane in all of this. Her sweet little island to stay on in a storm that could sink hundreds of ships battling it on their own.
"Thank you for coming Valekin."

"No problem."
He said with a smile. Though now he was concerned about her. She had a child to think about now, and that wasn't always the best thing for someone so young. Usually it tore their lives apart, and ended them right there. Valekin was going to make sure that wouldn't happen.
"How do you feel about all this? The baby I mean?"
It was imperative that he knew how she felt about it because then he could act accordingly. If she was going to keep the child, then he'd have to prepare for it. If she was going to abort or have the child fostered he'd have to prepare for that as well. So far, the only people that knew she was pregnant, was himself, and that doctor. And that doctor could be silenced.
"I'll take care of you either way."

Kate's feet stopped. Just all of a sudden. She loved Valekin, and he was just supporting her in which way... but there was that stubborn will inside of her that she had gotten from her jerk father that had just been made tougher from 552.
Her eyes were like ice when she looked at him, narrowed and glaring. Kate felt strongly on the subject. If you have a kid, take care of it. It wasn't the damned kids fault. S/he deserved to live!
"I'm keeping my child. I don't care if it ends up looking exactly like him... none of this was their fault," a hand slid over her stomach," I'm not the idiot who takes the short cut. Ever." A small little smile. It was a moment where there wasn't a trace of depression on her face, there wasn't a sign of the tears she had cried... or the hours of just lying there. Kate in this moment was fully herself, strongly believing in what she was saying.
"And I know your intentions were good, but next time you speak of such things... I'm slapping you as hard as I can. Okay Vale?"
A sweet smile for him. She had changed so much since last time they had known each other. Kate wasn't the sweet little girl who took care of everyone, and cared about everyone. The blonde fought everything and let few people close to her. And even those close she'd knock down a few pegs if they needed it. The world had twisted her so many times over... But the blonde still leaned in and kissed Vale on the cheek, knowing that all it was... was the fact that he cared.

"That's fine. I'll probably deserve it. I just needed to know the direction you were going in. And the direction to push you if you fell behind."
He smiled, and returned the affection in the same manner. He kept pace with Kate, and took comfort that she wouldn't let him walk all over her. So much like the women back home. Tough women that lived harsh lives and wouldn't be stepped on by anyone. Just because a shell crashed through their roof, doesn't mean they stopped being tough and responsible for theirs.
"You remind me.. of some of my people. Strong, tough, and responsible. Are you sure you're not a Serb?"
He joked, she obviously wasn't. But he said it in a light hearted tone.

That small little smile cracked into a grin. Kate a Serb? Well that was the funny thing...a very funny thing. She just might be... even if it was only a little.
"Maybe Vale. All I know is I'm Scottish from my mother. My father was dark haired...and actually looked a lot like you in a few features... but I never knew anything from his side of the family. But not enough to be a Serb I think."
Kate laughed. She was feeling better. Now, Kate knew the facts. There was no questioning. Already her wounds were healing, and soon enough her heart would as well. Nothing would keep her down for long.
"Hey Vale... let's do something... like go see a movie. I don't think I want to be stuck in the 'house' for much longer. Is that okay?"

"That's fine, what do you want to see? American movies; generally suck. I remember when Nightwatch came out in Moskau a bit back. Swamped theatres all over Russia! What a film."
Ok.. Not exactly what she was talking about. Considering that that part of the world got American made movies about ten to fifteen years after they are made. Where America gets them right out of the studios. So to him, Russia's market looks better. Because Serbia doesn't have one, and he's only seen Russian films.
"So what's playing in theaters? Rocky IV? Something like that, da?"
Completely wrong. Oh dear was he going to get a learning experience.

Kate just stared at him for just a moment. The poor child. She just stared at him, and then shook her head sadly. Rocky? Oh hell no.
"Vale... trust me. Movies now...are good. Very good. We just need to figure out what to see."
The blonde reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone. Her fingers danced across the buttons before she put the thing to her ear.
"Hi! Can you tell me what movies are out right now?"
A quick list off made her raise an eyebrow. Well, this would be interesting indeed. She looked at Valekin and rattled off all the titles.
"Fantastic Four: Rise of the silver surfer, Mr. Brooks, Surf's Up....and the rest you'd need to see the first few movies before we went and saw 'em. So.... action, thriller, or comedy?"
Kate clicked her phone shut and smiled at him. This would be interesting to say the least.

"I'll trust you on that. Considering I haven't had much time to investigate America's movie quality. I'm quite partial to action and thriller films. Did you see that one of those Japanese films that came over on the boat and swamped theaters but really sucked?"
That left a lot of choices open. Like Dark Water, and The Ring. All that crap. Which he saw, as crap. Scary spider girl in a well. Oooooo. He'd cut her fucking limbs off. And that's what he said in the theater. He remembers it clearly.
"Bunch of pansies! I'd cut her fucking legs off!"
"Woo, you tell 'em!"
Of course that theater conversation was within his head as a memory. He really wasn't the kind of person to talk during the movie, unless everyone was buying something that should be bought, and NO one would shut up.
"So we go down to coin toss?"

That left Silver Surfer or Mr.Brooks. And Kate didn't care which one they went to see. She fished in her pockets again and pulled out a coin. With a grin she held it out to Valekin. He could flip it.
"Heads...Silver Surfer... Tails Mr. Brooks."
This was fun. Kate felt like a normal high schooler in moments like this. Despite the fact they were still in the hospital, and she had just found out she was pregnant. This was a normal life, right? Talking about movies and trying to decide which one to see with your best friend? It was...normal. And that made her smile real, that warm fuzzy kind of smile that just infects everyone who sees it with more warm fuzzies.
"You flip it Vale."
