OK, not sure how clear this will be but I'll give it a try.
If a character picks up a rock and throws it, they got a ranged attack and you can find rocks basically anywhere. If not rocks then something that can be thrown. If it's light enough you can throw it a fair distance and do it at a fairly high speed, like how baseball pitchers can throw fastballs that clock over 90 mph. And if it hits you it's going to hurt, though not as much as if they picked up a really big rock and chucked it at you. But the big rock isn't going to go as far or as fast then the little one. Now this anyone could do.
Well ranged Qi is kind of like a rock that you always have. If it doesn't do a lot of damage then maybe it can be fast and go far. The more damage a shot does the slower it gets and the closer you have to get.
The basic point is, a person doesn't need a range Qi to do a ranged attack. So maybe let them keep it with the above sort of logic in mind. If they can't come up with something different then just throwing ranged attacks then they're going to get hammered when people start thinking of counters for their attacks and they have nothing to fall back on.

A good point but the thing with that is within Xin physics, you can kick the rock and break it or whatever. Could you kick a ranged Qi attack? If so how? Could you even see it? I will say here I only know about Qis I've seen in my threads so I don't know about most others but...
A big problem I see, using the rock analogy, you have the rock at all times so you huck it at a distance and the opponent has that part beat. Ok, but it has to travel out from your body to actually be a Qi so what stops you from adjusting and using it at a close range? Using Ralph as my example in this case; let's say he has the fire around his hands and can hurl fireballs or fire blasts at a distance. Someone is too quick, he waits and throws one from short range... boom. There's no way a fire ball that works ten feet away wouldn't work one away thus someone with a ranged Qi not only has range but upclose abilities as well.

If it's a big and hard enough rock it still hurts even if you smash it. And if I wait till your close I can throw it at you when your five feet away or even smash you over the head with it at point blank range. And again, the bigger the rock the harder it will hit. And for Qi most ranged attacks I've seen have a physical component. Even Emily's wind strike has that. It would be almost as if someone got a piece of glass the right weight and balance to throw like a throwing star. It would be hard to see and it would cut you if it hit. But glass isn't going to give off heat and like her attack you'll see that the person made a throwing motion so you could use that to know where to dodge.

True enough but it still gives them the ability of close and long range attacks...

So do other things if your creative enough, we just see this one cause it's an easy target.

That would be another problem with it in my book. You get in a simple sense two methods of attack for little creativity. No one misunderstand, I'm not calling those Qis uncreative but how they could be used. Anyway taking a elemental immediate body are Qi, turning that into a long range attack would require an amount of creativity in using a set ability. I.e. using an ice one, you break a water fountain spout toward your opponent and as the water sprays out freeze it creating an ice wave of sorts. More creative than simply waiting longer to use the same ability.

While I can easily see both the pro's and con's of ranged Qi, it seems to me like, in the end, it DOES take away from what I consider the spirit of these Xin boards to be: Personal, up-close fist fighting.
If I can go back to Hircine High for an example that helps me: Near the end of the original boards lifeline, and then during our new one's as well, many people were entering or creating extensive storylines that, while usually interesting and entertaining to read, came off more like a Rambo movie than a Xin flash cartoon. People were using guns and the like on a very wide basis, having gun-fights and throwing explosives and stuff. Needless to say, I started to tire of it, and made mention of how this is the XIN WORLD. The way I see the Xin world is kind of like what you'd see in your good ol' chop-socky Kung Fu flick. Two people have a problem? They settle it with martial arts. The fate of the world needs to be decided? No better way than a one on one duel, hand to hand. Granted, they can fly around and balance on tree branches half an inch wide and fight with the grace of a swan, but they're still gonna duke it out like that.
That's what I think of the Xin world as. And I don't think projectile attacks are overpowered, but I'm not so sure if I think that they really give off the right feel. This is Xin we're talking about, not Dragon Ball Z.
On the subject of AoE's... ehhh, those are a little cheap. As much as I hate to admit this, though, I actually agree with Fontie about Mathew's not being unfair so much as it is just evening the playing field. I haven't actually SEEN any other AoE Qi about, but that may be the result of my new-ness.
And FINALLY, Malice/Leon, I think that this rule, if applied, should indeed apply to all prior students as well. There's only one really big reason I think this, though: Your character, Leon, uses projectile Qi. It looks really, really bad on you as an Administrator if you limit Qi's to not use projectiles, but save yourself from having to change. I'm not at all saying this was your attention, but in case you hadn't thought of it, it's a very good reason to change it for everyone.

You make a good point with what you say Adrian, but I had modified it in the first place to combat the ranged Qi's. It was originally to put electricity into my STRIKES, thus going with my old nickname Leon The Lightning Strike. But then AoE's and Ranges came into play and I descided to combat it, by obliterating nubs and their ranged abilities. Then when everyone descided it was a bad idea, they would stop doing it and I could change it back, but I had already planned on changing my Qi back to its original form.

I would like to apologize to Shikei for the way I acted earlier today. I was out of place saying that the way I did. I'm sorry.

To the above post: Everyone gets a bit grumpy sometimes. To Shikei: Hope you come back! ((Hope you haven't left yet)) This board is a really nice one- once you get something running. Ranged projectiles: I believe that the ranged stuff, as mentioned above with the others, consist of a lot of debris- rocks and trashcans, and whatnot. Hell, if there is nothing- then throw your freaking shoe! Or use your belt as a whip. Or even strangle them with your jacket! The possibilities are endless! I mean, technically, if the elemental Qi's were somewhat like projectiles, then wouldn't it be fair if the individual: Takes a projectile-> covers it with their elemental ability(since it emanates)-> then throws it, giving the object more of a punch Or if, like for Leon, there's metal behind the opponent. Couldn't he just use the properties of lightning to connect with the metal? Or make the lightning stick outward more since it is attracted by the metal? A nice little thing would be to focus a bit more on air pressure. Suppose you have the "flame" ability. Now, if you could use some massive air pressure to make your flames shoot outward a bit, or something....that would be good. Lightning ball, fire ball, whatever balls feel a bit questionable. Shooting rays and stuff- seem out of context. What may be quite nice would be the ability to hit the opponent with a massive wave of air pressure generated by your body/punch moving at high speeds to hit them like...a feet or so before they actually meet the fist. Aura? How about aura? That would be the energy which surrounds the individual...well. How does it work when someone's aura is positively stronger than anothers? Should there be a factor of being able to intimidate with one's aura? Killer glare? Potential of rape? Mind rape?!?! Hell, if there's no projectiles, break the fucking floor or wall. Throw the tiles in the ceiling. Run and kick. So...I suppose a massive wave of energy shooting outward from you is out of the question. -I have no idea what I just said.

See, in my opinion, generally the highest range a qi should have falling short of creating a ranged attack by proxy (ice spears, lightning conductivity, flame fanning, etc) would be something like 1ft further then the characters body (thus aura like as many people question). However I believe that full on AoE qis could possibly be allowed, IF and only IF the person factors in the bleed out of such an energy waste...
